Mass on a spring: where the energy goes

Gravitational energy is measured from the initial lowest point. Initial displacement is measured downward from equilibrium. Changing mass, stiffness or initial displacement restarts the motion. With damping, mechanical energy is converted into thermal energy in the surroundings.
